British conductor Ivor Bolton has been named as the new music director of Madrid’s Teatro Real.
In 2000, Bolton made his Salzburg Festival debut at the invitation of Gerard Mortier, the former artistic director of the Teatro Real.
Bolton will work alongside Joan Matabosch, who became the company’s artistic director last year following the controversial dismissal of Mortier.
Whilst he’s performed at many of the world’s leading opera houses, (conducting 17 new productions at the Bavarian State Opera since 1994) Bolton is also active on the concert and recording scenes, having worked with Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich and Munich Philharmonic.
Bolton will take up his new role for a period of five years, beginning in 2015.
