Senior Vocal Coach

New England Conservatory of Music


New England Conservatory (NEC) seeks a dynamic and experienced pianist/vocal coach with a passion for working with conservatory-level undergraduate and graduate singers and pianists. Working closely with the Chairs of Opera, Voice, Collaborative Piano, and the Opera Music Director, the Senior Vocal Coach is a creatively motivated professional with the highest level of musicianship and a commitment to excellence in teaching. The coach has a demonstrated record as an educator and a performer with connections to the professional opera field. This full-time academic year position will contribute to the NEC campus community that promotes cultural equity and belonging.


  • Coach and prepare singers for mainstage operas
  • Coach, perform, and provide musical direction for opera scenes programs, Liederabends, and other departmental performances
  • Coach singers individually on repertoire, language, audition preparation, etc.
  • Teach courses for collaborative piano majors, including Orchestral Reductions (co-taught) and Vocal Coaching Techniques; prepare syllabi and comply with curricular and pedagogical standards set by Department Chair and NEC’s administration
  • Assess student progress
  • Serve as pianist and participate in other events as needed (masterclasses, special events, etc.)
  • Attend faculty meetings and participate in departmental planning
  • Provide administrative support for coaching programs
  • Offer mentorship and career guidance to emerging singers and pianists


  • Master’s degree or comparable experience with a professional opera company or college-level opera program
  • Extensive knowledge of standard and contemporary opera and vocal repertoire
  • Exceptional musician, high level piano skills and strong background in collaborative piano
  • An openness to diverse musical styles and ways of learning/teaching
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Commitment to work with a diverse faculty and student body
  • Coaching experience in a professional opera company and/or college/university opera program
  • Extensive knowledge of and ability to teach English, French, Italian, and German diction for singers; additional languages (including Slavic languages) a plus
  • Strong interest in new music
  • Exceptional judgment, discretion, and integrity when working with students and faculty in an educational environment
  • Understanding of and commitment to advancing NEC’s values of cultural equity and belonging
