The Spartanburg Philharmonic announces an opening for the position of Music Director beginning with the 2023-2024 season. The Spartanburg Philharmonic is a professional orchestra that operates with a $700,000+ budget and gives five Masterworks and four chamber concerts per season, along with other community and education programs. Spartanburg, SC is a city of 37,000 with a countywide population of 320,000. Located in the upstate of South Carolina, Spartanburg was recently identified as one of the fastest growing cities in the US. The Philharmonic performs in Twichell Auditorium on the Converse University campus. With roots dating back to the 1880’s, the Spartanburg Philharmonic began in 1928 as a volunteer orchestra and presenting organization. Over the last 30 years, the organization developed into a professional orchestra, expanding diverse and educational programs including a Bluegrass Series, partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Link Up, bi-weekly community series and two Youth Orchestras. We are seeking a conductor who, in addition to the musical talents required of a conductor, will also demonstrate: strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills; enthusiasm for and experience with music education and community engagement; vision, passion, and ability to make symphonic music relevant and exciting for existing and new audiences.
