THE POSITION

The Managing Director provides institutional leadership for American Lyric Theater in the areas of fundraising and artist advocacy and promotion, while overseeing day-to-day administrative and operational functions of the company. This position is ideal for someone with a development and/or publishing or marketing background who is looking to take on a leadership role in small, highly respected organization that is having significant impact on the opera field nationally. The position is based in New York City and is available immediately. Due to COVID-19, onboarding and the initial period of employment will be facilitated remotely until ALT’s office reopens in the fall (timing TBD).

Responsibilities include maximizing contributed and earned revenue; continuing to build ALT’s reputation in the opera field as thought leader in artist mentorship and new works development; promotion and advocacy for the work of ALT alumni artists; cultivating partnerships with other organizations; and ensuring efficient operation of program activities. The Managing Director works collaboratively with artistic leadership and the Board of Directors to achieve best business practices and fiscal accountability, and communicates ALT’s institutional vision to the public. The Managing Director also plays a vital role in fulfilling ALT’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through the company’s national Opera Writers Diversity and Representation Initiative (OWDARI).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising (50%)

  • Lead ALT’s development initiatives to successfully achieve its annual contributed revenue goals from individuals, corporations, foundations, and government, with an emphasis on identifying, cultivating, and securing new major gifts
  • Manage an accurate and up-to-date portfolio of institutional and individual donors through all phases of the moves management cycle by cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding relationships with new and existing supporters
  • Research foundation and government grant opportunities, and write grants in collaboration with artistic leadership
  • Meet or exceed revenue and other performance objectives by providing highly personalized service to donors and cultivating major donor relationships, including the completion of a defined quota of personal face-to-face visits with prospects/donors each month
  • Build increasing levels of involvement and support among individual donors and prospects through regular correspondence
  • Manage the donor acknowledgement process, including oversight of mailings, reports, and program book listings
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of donor contacts and ongoing communications with current donors and prospects
  • Work with the artistic leadership and the Board to create new gift strategies, communications plans, and production of development collateral
  • Assist in the strategy and implementation of Board prospect identification, cultivation, and recruitment
  • Engage Board members to maximize their participation in ALT and their contribution toward its success and growth

Artistic Advocacy and Promotion (30%)

  • Promote works by ALT alumni artists and their collaborators to opera companies and academic institutions
  • Manage all aspects of promotion including advertising, conventions, social media, website, and PR
  • Optimize a robust online presence for ALT alumni artists and their works, including interactive online catalog, perusal scores, and other media resources
  • Maintain rental library and manage sales, rental and licensing of operas
  • Collect and disburse royalty payments for associated artists and ALT
  • Proactively foster relationships with artistic leadership of opera companies and conservatories to facilitate new commissions and co-commissions by emerging composers and librettists
  • Conduct research to support the Opera Writers Diversity and Representation Initiative (OWDARI)
  • Expand outreach to potential strategic partners, and advocate for the work of ALT Resident Artists with the goal of increasing ALT’s partnerships nationally
  • Coordinate external communication strategies in collaboration with artistic leadership and Publicist
  • Serve as a spokesperson to the public in articulating and advocating for the vision, mission and impact of ALT.

General Management and Operations (20%)

  • Coordinate ALT’s day-to-day operations
  • Serve as the liaison to venue partners for public concerts, workshops and classes, including contracting, marketing coordination, box office reconciliation, and scheduling
  • Coordinate housing and travel for artists
  • Maintain accurate records of all correspondence and financial transactions related to program activity and general operations
  • Serve as the primary representative of ALT to stakeholders during periods when artistic leadership is not in New York City
  • Supervise the CLDP Program Associate to ensure efficient operations of the program
  • Collaborate with the artistic leadership and the Board on long-term strategic planning
  • Actively participate in OPERA America forums and conferences as a representative of ALT

ABOUT AMERICAN LYRIC THEATER 

Great operas don’t just happen. American Lyric Theater (ALT) was founded in 2005 by Lawrence Edelson to build a new body of operatic repertoire for new audiences by nurturing composers and librettists, developing sustainable artistic collaborations, and contributing new works to the national canon. ALT is the only company in the United States that offers extensive, full-time mentorship for emerging operatic writers as its primary mission. Our programs focus on serving the needs of composers and librettists, commissioning and developing new works, and collaborating with larger producing companies around the country to help usher those works into the repertoire.  Public performances presented in New York City serve to promote the work of gifted emerging artists, and to expose the public to the process of developing new operas. ALT’s flagship program is the Composer Librettist Development Program (CLDP), the first and only multi-year mentorship initiative for both opera composers and librettists in the country. The CLDP faculty includes some the country’s foremost artists, including composer-librettist Mark Adamo, librettist Mark Campbell, composer Anthony Davis, dramaturg Cori Ellison, and composer Jake Heggie.  To date, the CLDP has provided intensive, personalized mentorship to over 40 gifted emerging operatic writers. Alumni of the CLDP are at the forefront of creating new operas for companies around the country, including Opera Philadelphia, Houston Grand Opera and The Metropolitan Opera.

The Managing Director will bring energy and a well-rounded array of competencies to serve ALT’s mission, vision, and goals. An inclusive, empathetic and dynamic leader, the selected individual will have experience as a fundraiser, possess exceptional organizational and communication skills, and demonstrate the capacity to balance multiple projects simultaneously. They will exhibit a strong passion for opera, the mentorship of emerging artists, and championing diverse voices in our field.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Salary between $50K – $60K, commensurate with experience; plus a benefits package including paid holiday, vacation, and sick days; medical, and dental insurance plans; and a retirement plan.
