Job Title: Executive Director

Status: Full time. Exempt. Evening and weekend hours required.

Reports to: Board of Directors through its Chair

Supervises: Full and part time staff employed by the FSO, FSO Music Director, volunteers and interns.

Salary Range: competitive salary commensurate with experience

The Executive Director is responsible and accountable for the FSO’s financial, operational, organizational and artistic success. This includes, but is not limited to, leading, directing, staffing, budgeting, planning and coordinating activities to achieve the mission and goals established by the Board of Directors. Fund raising through multiple sources such as grants, sponsorships and special events comprises an important aspect of the financial responsibilities of the Executive Director. The Executive Director will reside in the FSO’s region and actively participate in the Fayetteville community to establish and nurture relationships, further the outreach of FSO, support development and public relations. The Executive Director will represent the FSO to the general public and the arts community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES are described below. This is not intended to be a complete list of all job responsibilities. Additional duties may be assigned at any time by the Board of Directors.

Board Support

  1. Attend all Board and Executive Committee meetings and any additional Board or committee meetings as needed.
  2. Communicate effectively with the Board. Provide timely, accurate and thorough information to the Executive Committee and Board on finances, operating and development activities and significant personnel issues.
  3. Coordinate logistics for the Board meetings. Prepare the agenda and meeting materials and disseminate to all Board members one week prior to regularly scheduled Board meetings.
  4. Prepare and distribute written reports to the Board consistent with an established schedule or as requested.

Planning, Development and Community Engagement

  1. Use creativity to plan and implement efficient, effective fundraising from a variety of sources.
  2. Collaborate with the Board to identify and cultivate sponsors, donors and season ticket holders.
  3. Provide strong stewardship for endowment and annual gifts consistent with the strategic plan.
  4. Ensure that all contributions and other support are acknowledged as required by law and as otherwise appropriate. Maintain accurate records of financial and other substantial support received.
  5. Ensure effective communication with all FSO stakeholders to accomplish objectives. Stakeholders include the Orchestra musicians, donors, subscribers, volunteers, Methodist University, Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville Academy, other arts organizations, government and business organizations, the media and the public.

Staff and Volunteers

  1. Supervise staff members using participative management that includes accountability and integrity. Provide ongoing informal constructive performance feedback and annual formal performance evaluations.
  2. Ensure compliance with employment practice rules and regulations.
  3. Recruit volunteers as needed. Ensure that volunteer resources are used effectively and make the experience meaningful for the volunteers.

Financial and Operational Management

  1. Prepare the annual operating budget and present to the Board of Directors for approval.
  2. Direct FSO’s business management to assure adherence to the operating budget including financial oversight, marketing and public relations, concert production, administration and human resources.
  3. Collaborate with the Board to develop and implement strategic planning to ensure long term relevance and viability of the FSO.
  4. Ensure compliance with financial, accounting and operational regulations. This includes all annual reporting required by state and federal agencies and granting organizations.
  5. Prepare regular financial reports and cash flow projections for the Board of Directors.

Artistic Administration

  1. Form a productive and professional working relationship with the Music Director and assist the Music Director in achieving FSO’s artistic objectives.
  2. Negotiate and manage contracts for guest artists and performing groups within the approved budget.
  3. Foster an environment that allows orchestra members, conductors and guest artists to do their best work. Actively seek new opportunities for performances, partnerships and collaboration throughout the community and region.
  4. Appreciates classical music genres, attends orchestra performances and serves as an advocate for the FSO.


  1. Baccalaureate degree in relevant field.
  2. At least three years of experience as a manager in a not-for-profit organization. Experience managing performing arts organizations preferred.
  3. Demonstrated ability to independently manage projects related to organizational image building, marketing, external relations and fundraising.


  1. Must be able to receive and transmit communications clearly, accurately and in a manner that develops respect and confidence of a variety of constituents such as Board members, staff, artists, donors and other critical cohorts.
  2. Strong financial management and reporting skills are necessary.
  3. Solid skills in PC office-based software and donor database software.
  4. Must be able to perform routinely required office physical activities such as walking, standing, bending, lifting, carrying, etc within reasonable accommodations for any limitations.
