Marketing and business development manager Sarah Frost introduces artsdb, our revamped listings platform, and explains how to get involved
It’s a very exciting time here at Impromptu Publishing as we fully launch our updated performing arts database, artsdb. The website is the special project of managing director, Marcus Netherwood, who responded to subscribers’ demands to provide digital and portable access to the information published in the Performing Arts Yearbook.
‘Information is priceless in today’s competitive market, but artsdb sets out to make it affordable for all,’ says Netherwood. ‘It’s been developed in conjunction with arts specialists to aid the end user to find specific information, whilst also providing the facility to find a range of contacts dependent on bespoke search criteria. The database differs to traditional search engines as it is a commercial search tool of over 24,000 listings – all focussed purely on the performing arts sector.’
Continues Netherwood: ‘Organisations are encouraged to verify and update their own information on a regular basis, whilst our team of updaters and editors keep the information current. Companies can enhance their listing by adding logos, upgrading their listing to ensure they are placed at the top of any relevant search – a useful add-on if your company starts with a “z” – plus opt to have traditional banner advertising throughout the site.’
So how does it work? Any performing arts organisation can have a basic listing for free, as well as purchase upgrade options to actively increase their visibilty. All you need to do is request login details from me, Sarah Frost, and you’re ready to go. High-profile subscribers include the United European Culture Association, the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras and numerous artist managers – artsdb has also proved popular at universities, who see the database as an invaluable tool for students wishing to become arts professionals.
How to get involved
There are two main ways to use the database:
- keep your organisation, venue, event, roster or service listing current and use it to promote what you do to other arts organisations
- subscribe and access the details of over 24,000 listings of venues, managers, festivals, organisations, funding bodies and more.
The beauty of the easy-to-use search filters is that you don’t need to know a specific organisation, venue or festival exists – you simply narrow your search using the predesignated fields and so can find new partners to work with from around the globe. For example, a touring chamber ensemble searching for a new venue in Asia can simply filter by country, venue type and capacity, rather than by a specific name.

We want artsdb to really benefit you and your company by providing the most comprehensive online database for the performing arts anywhere, so make keeping your content fresh a regular task. We also welcome user feedback, so if there’s something we can improve let us know.
