The Exorcist to make West End debut

Cult horror classic The Exorcist will make its West End theatrical debut in October. Based on the best-selling novel by William Peter Blatty, it tells the tale of a girl possessed by an evil spirit.

John Pielmeier has adapted the book for stage, with Sean Mathias directing. Mathias’s version of Harold Pinter’s No Man’s Land starring Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart was widely praised and won Best Revival at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards 2016.

The film adaptation of The Exorcist was released in 1972, winning two Academy Awards. Directed by William Friedkin, it is considered one of the most frightening films ever made. It was also hugely successful at the box office, taking more than USD400m.

Olivier Award-winner Anna Fleischle has designed the show, with lighting by Tim Mitchell (known for his work on Guys and Dolls), and sound design from Adam Cork. Ben Hart, meanwhile, takes on the important task of illusion design.

The Exorcist opens at London’s Phoenix Theatre on 20 October, 2017, and runs until 10 March, 2018.
