Esther Yoo begins tenure as RPO’s first ever artist in residence

Esther Yoo begins her tenure as Royal Philharmonic Orchestra artist in residence with a triptych of concerts in London, Guildford and Cambridge.

The American violinist will play Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with RPO at Cadogan Hall on 2 May, under the baton of Michał Nesterowicz. The programme is repeated on 3 May at G Live in Guildford, before she plays Glazunov’s Violin Concerto in A minor on 5 May at Cambridge Corn Exchange.

“I am delighted to have the chance to work with this wonderful international orchestra,” said Yoo, who is RPO’s first ever artist in residence. “I believe our partnership will be very exciting. It carries a responsibility for me to connect with audiences in London and elsewhere in the UK, not just to give great concerts but to reach out through activities beyond the concert hall.”

Future concerts in her new role include include Bruch’s Violin Concerto No 1 in London and Hull with Clemens Schuldt (September 2018) and Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in Cadogan Hall with Michele Mariotti (November 2018).

In addition to concert commitments, Yoo will pursue new education projects for the orchestra. Details of these have yet to be announced.

She added: “RPO is committed to broadening its audience and that is a mission that we share together. I think there are many ways that we can attract new audiences, so I look forward to collaborating with the orchestra as we reach out to them.”

Outside of her RPO position, Yoo has upcoming dates with Tivoli Copenhagen Philharmonic (13 May, Copenhagen and 18 May, Santander), Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (25 and 26 May, Hong Kong) and with her own Z.E.N. Trio (25 July, Aspen and 28 July, Ottawa).
