Three bears ballet is just right for kids

Northern Ballet has begun work on its fifth creation for kids, a new adaptation of Goldilocks & the Three Bears. The piece will receive its world premiere on 24 October 2016, and tour across the UK in 2017.

The show is part of a programme called Short Ballets for Small People, which aims to engage young children in live dance, music and theatre. It follows in the footsteps of the series first four productions: Ugly Duckling, Three Little Pigs, Elves & the Shoemaker and Tortoise & the Hare. Each of these has gone on to be adapted for television by BBC channel CBeebies.

‘Since its inception these ballets have enchanted children and their families across the UK and for many offered the first opportunity to attend the theatre and to experience live ballet and music,’ said Short Ballets for Small People artistic director Daniel de Andrade. ‘Our children’s ballets are created with the needs of our audience in mind and as such are designed to be short, captivating and uplifting.’

Junior soloist Nicola Gervasi has choreographed Goldilocks & the Three Bears, which will feature set designs by Jane Cecchi, lighting from Alastair West and music composed by John Longstaff. The ballet is approximately 40 minutes long, with live musical accompaniment.

Northern Ballet was voted Best Company at the 2014 Taglioni European Ballet Awards, and is currently touring Jonathan Watkins’ 1984. The world premiere of Goldilocks & the Three Bears takes place at Northern Ballet’s Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre in Leeds.
