Using monologues created by each writer, Dear Scotland… will take audiences on a promenade through the gallery to discover more about the people behind the portraits, including Mary Queen of Scots, Robert Louis Stevenson and The Cromartie Fool.
The writers participating in Dear Scotland… include Jackie Kay, A L Kennedy, Rob Drummond and Hardeep Singh Kohli.
Directed by Joe Douglas and Katrin Evans, the promenade performances will take place from 24 April – 3 May.
Christopher Baker, director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, said: ‘We are delighted to be working with the National Theatre of Scotland; to see its inspiring performances showcased in the context of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and its great collection will be one of the highlights of 2014.’
The project is part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s season of work dedicated to Scottish culture and heritage. Audiences are being encouraged to pen their thoughts about the country on postcards, which can be sent back to the theatre for free.
