American Federation of Musicians backs Biden

The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) has endorsed Joe Biden for President. It is the second major arts union to throw its support behind the Democrat, after the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) did so in May.

The decision was made after a vote from its board, and comes as the Democratic Convention gets underway. The union cited Biden’s commitment to a number of pro-worker measures – including right to work laws – as a key reason for its decision.

“For musicians who are concerned about providing for themselves and their families, protecting their rights at work, being able to perform their job without undue political influence, and ensuring the security of their pay, benefits, and retirement, Joe Biden is the clear choice,” said AFM international president Ray Hair. “The federation joins with all Americans who want to see a nation that is united, that promotes inclusion and a vision for the future, and that honours and respects all of its citizens.”

In its statement back in May, IATSE also highlighted Biden’s commitment to pro-worker measures: “Joe Biden has consistently lifted up and prioritised issues affecting IATSE members and their families – from protecting workers’ rights to organise a union and bargain for higher wages and better benefits, to defending our earned pension checks and health care.”

The AFL-CIO – a body that represents most of the US’s major unions – has also backed Biden for president.
