Kennedy Center Theater for Young Audiences (KCTYA)

The Manager, KCTYA oversees the day-to-day management of the Theater for Young Audiences department, ensuring that timelines are structured and followed, deadlines are met, and effective and efficient systems, processes, and communication are utilized.  Manager, KCTYA manages all aspects of commissioning, producing, presenting, and touring productions through the department; handles artist logistics throughout a production process; maintains relationships with external artists before, during and after a production; and oversees the duties of the full-time Program Assistant, as well as over 100 contracted and part-time artists and production personnel each season.  The Manager, KCTYA serves as the primary contact with outside theatrical Unions and therefore manages all auditions, casting, negotiating and hiring of artists, as well as Union and non-Union payroll.  The position also creates and manages the program budget, supervises the processing and executing of contracts, and acts as a liaison with other departments in the Kennedy Center like Marketing, Advertising, Press, Finance, Development and Production.  The Manager, KCTYA works closely with the Director, Programming for Young Audiences in season planning, commissioning, dramaturgy, script development, booking presentations, New Visions/New Voices and more.

Duties and Responsibilities:

55%    In-house productions: serves as general manager for new productions of KCTYA (2-5 per season), negotiating designer and actor contracts and being a main contact with KC Marketing, Advertising, Press and Production departments; serves as the main liaison and producer with the U.S. Botanic Garden; serves as KCTYA primary casting contact and manages all aspects of auditions, casting and hiring of principals and understudies for all touring and produced shows and workshops; manages aspects of the biennial New Visions/New Voices as well as the Springboard initiative; consults on bookings/presentations; manages archival and promo video shoots

15%    KCTYA on Tour: directs all aspects of the KCTYA on Tour productions including: supervising performers and production personnel of each touring company, including being the “on call” liaison with touring companies to solve problems, make decisions, and help maintain the company’s professionalism and welfare while on the road; overseeing the tour routing and managing KCTYA Program Assistant with housing and travel for the company; coordinating with the Production Department in the hiring of tour production personnel and their training/orientation; supervising the external Agent who is selling and routing the KCTYA tours; serving as a primary contact regarding tour-related business with members of the Development Advisory Committees

15%    Finance: develops and monitors all program budgets; serves as the department’s primary contact with Kennedy Center Finance and Payroll personnel on matters such as budgeting, monthly projections, and account reconciliations; supervises the preparation and executing of financial contracts related to KCTYA productions and tours, including Commissioning Agreements, Independent Contracts, and Employee Contracts, as well as serving as the department’s primary liaison with theatrical unions, including: United Scenic Artist’s (USA) Designer Agreements, Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SDC) Agreements, and Actors’ Equity Association (AEA) Contracts; oversees the processing of all artist weekly payroll, as well as the processing of subsequent and applicable Union benefits (health and welfare, pension, and dues).

12%    Commissioning/Season Planning: actively coordinates long-range planning efforts with Artistic Director, Theater for Young Audiences, and Director, Education Programs and Production, including season planning, development of new work through commissioning projects, managing development readings, providing dramaturgical feedback for plays in development, etc., assists in creating mutually beneficial collaborations/connections with other Education Division programs; negotiates, prioritizes, and works to present quality work for  young audiences and families; attends shows outside of the building that KCTYA is considering presenting; building-wide consultant on young audiences presentations and programming.

3%      Other: As appropriate, represents the Kennedy Center at national and international conferences and with organizations such as; Theatre for Young Audiences/USA, International Performing Arts for Youth, Association of Performing Arts Presenters, American Alliance for Theatre and Education, and others; maintains contact and communications with local, national, and international artists and manager in the TYA field.

Education/Experience:

A Master’s degree in the performing arts, arts management, Theater for Young Audiences, or other related field, or equivalent professional experience.  Five or more years of experience in performing arts administration.

Minimum Skills and/or Knowledge Required:

A background in theater for young audiences and performing arts touring is helpful, as is a strong grasp on the national and international trends of work for young audiences.  Strong managerial and administrative abilities.  Resourcefulness, excellent problem-solving skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks, attention to detail, and the ability to work with a team structure are essential.  Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.  Must possess a motivated and team-player work ethic and an ability to build trust and confidence.  An affinity for numbers and organization is essential.  Computer literary, including experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access in a PC work environment.
