The Director of Venue Operations is a member of the senior management team and ensures the effective and efficient short- and long-term operation of Indiana Symphony Society, Inc. facilities. This position plans and provides concert and event patron services to meet the needs and expectations of Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra audiences.


  • Develops and manages staffing and procedures to ensure that audience members and event participants have safe, physically accessible, and comfortable experiences at all ISO venues, including the Hilbert Circle Theatre, Symphony on the Prairie, and other occasional venues as assigned.
  • Oversees Symphony on the Prairie, including all elements of booking (in partnership with an outside agency) and execution.
  • Ensures proper appearance and operation of the facilities at all times. Plans and manages preventative and routine maintenance, repair and improvements for all systems, equipment, furnishings, interiors and exteriors except for stage systems. Manages contracted services as needed.
  • Efficiently manages financial resources by preparing annual budgets for approval, reflecting all concert hall and Symphony Centre operations and capital improvement needs. Manages expenses so as to adhere to the approved budget. Prepares and maintains the long-range capital replacement and improvement budget.
  • Works closely with the Director of Orchestra Operations on the planning and execution of concerts and events.
  • Manages major capital improvements to facilities, including collection and analysis of bids when required. Supervises work.
  • Serves as organization’s primary contact with Conner Prairie, including lease agreements and ISO-driven capital improvement projects for Symphony on the Prairie.
  • Oversees outsourced property management service and vendor relationships necessary to operate ISO facilities.
  • Comply with all city ordinances and represents the ISO on various city committees.
  • Manages tenant affairs and lease fulfillment of Symphony Centre, including monitoring collection of rents, maintenance of leased spaces, and managing design and construction for all tenant improvements. Serves as primary ISO management representative for tenants.
  • Oversees and negotiates lease agreements with current facilities, including Victoria Centre, Circle Tower, and warehouse.
  • Ensures proper security for all ISO facilities, including management of security services providers and all access systems.
  • Manages promotion and booking of Hilbert Circle Theatre as a rental venue for corporate events, concert promoters, televised broadcasts, weddings, and other appropriate events.
  • Responsible for all food and beverage activities, including financial performance, inventory management, timely renewals of licenses, and managing the Food and Beverage Manager.
  • Oversees members of the wardrobe union when hired as needed for specific performances.
  • Administers collective bargaining agreements for the stagehand and wardrobe unions.
  • Ensures successful load-in and load-out of each season, including all temporary structures, trailers, etc.
  • Provides support for special projects as assigned by the CEO.

B.A. or B.S. degree in a related field required. At least four years related experience in facility management as well as concert or event management including supervision of a substantial number of employees. Concert hall operations experience preferred. Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. General knowledge of Classical music is preferred.


INTERNAL: CEO, Music Director, conductors, staff, and musicians.

EXTERNAL: Contact with board members, community members, volunteers, vendors, guest artists, tenants, and building contractors. Occasional contact with city representatives.


Information regarding internal and external events and people, community and corporate institutions, internal personnel salaries, and corporate financial information.


This position is responsible for a team of 14 with direct supervision of seven individuals. In addition, this person may have oversight of a much larger group, depending on the number of extras and volunteers needed on a particular concert or event.


This position requires an individual who is able to work a flexible schedule in a busy environment. Must be available 24 hours/7 days a week for emergency calls. Must be self-motivated and able to handle many tasks and new situations with minimum supervision. Work often requires ability to manage and balance concerns and problems of patrons while maintaining established policies. Excellent interpersonal communications skills are needed, as is the ability to calmly deal with a medical or facility crisis. Requires managing multiple projects and priorities effectively.
